On-premises or in the cloud: Which LIMS Type Is Best for Your Laboratory

One of the first decisions you need to make when deciding which kind of cheap lims software Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to implement for your organization is the hosting situation; Will you host your LIMS on-premises (pay per license; PPL) or hosted in the cloud, either in the form of software as a service (SaaS) or platform as a service (PaaS).

The cost, information security, and regulatory requirements of your organization all need to be taken into account when selecting a hosting environment. Even if you have already invested in an on-premises system, more and more cloud-hosted LIMS options are now available. In the past, the PPL model was used to implement LIMS.

Organizations might choose one of these hosting options over the other for a variety of reasons. Let’s take a look at the LIMS hosting considerations, the advantages and disadvantages of the various models, and everything else you should think about before choosing the best option for your lab.

The most important PPL LIMS vendors are Lab Vantage, Lab Ware, Sample Manager, and STARLIMS. Each of these vendors’ LIMS products will have all of the features you need and be able to be set up to provide the features you want. Their benefits to data integrity and ongoing customer support are well-known.

If your company is large enough to have the infrastructure and IT support budget necessary to properly maintain a LIMS, hosting your LIMS on premises using a PPL model may be the best option. This might include buying dedicated servers at a higher price.

    Smaller specialty PPL

LIMS products for specific environments, such as materials testing, agriculture, or environmental testing, are available in addition to these four. If you don’t need a validated, highly configurable system, a smaller vendor might be an option.

An on-premises LIMS could simplify your workflows and improve data integrity if most of your data is stored in spreadsheets. When your laboratory operates in a regulated environment, an on-premises LIMS also has the perception of increased data integrity. On the other hand, your company is in charge of the failover plans, backups, and security.

    Major PaaS LIMS Considerations

The well-known names in LIMS technology offer PaaS cloud hosting, as you might expect. There are a number of cloud-only PaaS LIMS providers in addition to the major four traditional pay-per-license providers.

Regarding the security and regulatory implications of a cloud-hosted LIMS, there are outdated misconceptions. The physical security provided by the LIMS turbotube vendor is beyond the capabilities of the majority of businesses, and they have the resources and expertise to keep an eye out for major security breaches. All hardware is managed by the provider in a PaaS cloud-based system, which does not originate from a server at the end user’s location. However, the application’s installation and upkeep, including any updates, are your company’s responsibility.

If your company is small or your lab staff is spread out across multiple sites and time zones, a PaaS LIMS may be beneficial. Your organization only pays for what you use with this model. The software’s adaptability to laboratory workflows is yet another advantage of the PaaS model. On the other hand, it is your organization’s responsibility to carry out any necessary validation.
